Ports and port towns provide the infrastructural facilities to promote trade, the growth and development of trade bring in economic prosperity and cultural integration through men and their manners. A country which has a flourishing international maritime trade is economically powerful and culturally advanced.

Hitherto Mormugao was considered to be an exclusively iron ore exporting Port. It is now emerging as a multi-commodity port handling a variety of cargoes both import & export, cargoes like petroleum & petroleum products, bulk storage & tank farms, coal, coke, alumina, steel slabs and several other cargoes.

During the 119 years of its history, this Port had many problems to face but have been able to find ways of successfully countering them. Ever since the declaration of Mormugao as Major Port in 1963, there has been an upsurge in the export of iron ore which today stands about 22.94 million tonnes.

India has demonstrated to the world its inherent capability to remain as an integrated and united nation. Based on the strength and endurance of this great nation during the last 57 years we see our new India marching ahead to face the new challenges of the 21st century with cool confidence and confident coolness.

During the year 2003-04, the Port has achieved an all time record traffic of 27.87 million tonnes registering a remarkable growth of 18% over the previous year.

The Port is taking up dredging in the near future to provide deep-drafted mooring berths within the sheltered water area of the Port.
